Prior coming to Italy, I have never used the public transportation system in the United States besides in New York. Thus, I did not have high expectations on how reliable or safe Italy’s transportation would be. To get to certain classes I have to take the metro system which is essentially the subway. It is fast and reliable but has a high risk for pick pocketing especially on the B line. As long as you don’t keep loose items in your pocket and you hold onto all your bags you are safe. The train system is another reliable option if you need to travel far. I use it when traveling within the country and have gone to many cities safely with it. There is the fast train with no stops but is more expensive and the slow train with stops but you can get really inexpensive tickets. A lot of people use Lime scooters to get around the city and you can hail cabs here as well. Prior, I did not appreciate or value the public transportation system because I didn’t not depend on it. Now that I rely so heavily on it to get around I am going to continue to use it when I return to the U.S. because I understand its practical use. At my home university in Orlando they are putting in more trains to get to the main cities and ports. Before coming to Italy I probably wouldn’t have bothered using them since I would just use my car to get places. Although the trains would be more costly of time they would be a relaxed cheap option if I was trying to get from Orlando to Miami. In Italy I learned how to use basically every mode of transportation on my own and unspoken rules. Such as not to look someone in the eye or smile which is the same at home and that although the metro may look full you still could fit someone else inside.
