The U.S. Culture involves a fast-paced way of living, where every second has a purpose. The culture puts a high value on productivity and time management within their schedule. Although some people do not follow this way of living this lifestyle it’s shown in various aspects of American society such as the business environment and urban life. This way of living can often be stressful for most people when going about their day-to-day; Specifically within social media.
Individuals outside of the culture might view this way of living as stressful, overwhelming, or demanding. The constant drive for productivity, time efficiency, and goal achievement can create a sense of urgency that may be perceived as daunting. The emphasis on multitasking and juggling several responsibilities might be seen as exhausting, leaving little room for relaxation or the appreciation of meaningful moments. Moreover, the expectations tied to success and ambition in the U.S. may contribute to external observers feeling pressured. The competitive nature of certain aspects of American life, whether in education or career, can foster an environment where individuals may feel compelled to constantly strive for more, potentially at the cost of their well-being.
In contrast to the fast-paced lifestyle in the U.S., I have always found myself drawn to a slower way of living. This became apparent to me during high school, where the hustle of the American culture seemed to overshadow the importance of savoring life’s simple moments. As I longed for a different experience, I decided to study abroad in Paris, a city renowned for its appreciation of the finer things in life.
Paris, with its rich cultural heritage and emphasis on relaxed enjoyment, aligns with my desire for a slower pace. The concept of the joy of living is deeply ingrained in Parisian culture, emphasizing finding pleasure in everyday experiences.
I am very excited to continue using this exercise! Especially since I will be leaving abroad soon, this allowed me to remind myself of the reason why I wanted to study abroad in the first place. This process also allowed me to articulate my thoughts on the contrasting lifestyles and my preference for a slower way of living.
As I embark on this exciting journey, keeping these reflections in mind can help guide my experiences and decisions. Studying abroad is an opportunity for personal growth, cultural exploration, and the chance to embrace a different lifestyle. It’s an adventure that shapes individuals into global awareness and citizens, growing their lives in ways that go beyond.
I’m thrilled to continue this exercise as it has rekindled my excitement and reminded me of the initial reasons behind my decision to study abroad. It is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on my aspirations, goals, and the experiences that I hope to gain during my time abroad. As I prepare for this new chapter, maintaining a clear understanding of my motivations can serve as a guiding light, helping me navigate challenges and cherish the unique moments that lie ahead.
