Abroad blog prompt #1
- Going back to my last semester class, Intercultural Communication. One of the aspects of U.S. culture that stuck out the most to me was the individualist nature of society. This cultural trait is reflected in various aspects of daily life, including social interactions, career pursuits, and decision-making processes. Individuals are often encouraged to pursue their goals and aspirations, emphasizing personal responsibility and achievement. To paint a clear picture, this trait can be seen in the emphasis on personal autonomy and the pursuit of individual goals. Individuals often express their unique opinions, preferences, and identities in social interactions. This can be observed in diverse clothing styles, diverse entertainment choices, and the celebration of individual achievements.
- As I answer the second question, it is essential that I first introduce my background. I am originally from Colombia, born and raised in Cartagena, and moved to the United States in 2015 when I was 19. For most of my life, I lived and learned in a Latino cultural background. I have found that I appreciate the emphasis on individualism in U.S. culture for its promotion of personal freedom and the pursuit of individual goals. It has felt empowering and allowed individuals to express their unique identities and aspirations. However, I also find aspects of individualism in U.S. culture to differ from the more communal and interconnected values I grew up with. The emphasis on personal success and independence might be perceived as contrasting with the importance of community and collective well-being. The balance between individualism and community values was a point of cultural difference and adaptation. Growing up in my household, decisions were made for the well-being of the group, not the individual. This goes into decisions that were made and values that were ingrained in us, like studying and seeking a degree. It’s seen as an obligation so that we can later help our families scale the social ladder. I have found that since 2015, I’ve been slowly emerging both of these identities and have found a comfortable place where I can express myself. I’ve become more individual in my decisions, but I still constantly think about the repercussions confident choices will have on my family.
- Considering what was said above, someone outside of the U.S. culture might view the emphasis on individualism as intriguing and potentially contrasting with their cultural norms. Individuals from cultures prioritizing collective well-being and interdependence might find aspects of U.S. individualism challenging or even isolating. The competitive nature of certain aspects of U.S. culture, particularly in the professional realm, might be perceived as intense or individualistic to overshadow community-oriented values. Differences in communication styles, decision-making processes, and social interactions influenced by this cultural trait might create a sense of unfamiliarity or require adjustment. While some may appreciate the emphasis on personal gain, others might navigate the tension between pursuing individual goals and the communal values ingrained in their cultural background.
- This exercise will help me become more aware of cultural variations, allowing me to understand and appreciate the diversity of cultural values and norms. This awareness is crucial for effective cross-cultural communication and interaction. Going abroad for a complete semester is enough time for artistic values to impact one’s scope of understanding. I will be away from my comfort zone and what I know for four months, allowing me to experience a different world. It’s essential to understand that I will most likely encounter different values, norms, communication styles, and more, and it’s necessary to be aware of this and understand this change. This exercise has also allowed me to reflect on my cultural background and consider different perspectives, enhancing my adaptability. This will help me become more open-minded and better equipped to navigate potential cultural differences during my time abroad.
