Living in the same country your entire life, you begin to become blind to cultural differences between other cultures. However, when you take a step back, it is easy to identify the cultural ideals that are important to you, and your country. One cultural value in America that has always stuck out to me is the emphasis on individualism and independence. In the United States, it is admirable for people to focus on self expression and standing out as an individual. There is very much a desire to be greater than the person next to you. This comes with hard work, dedication, and bravery. To stand out is to be seen, and that is not always an easy thing. In the United States, those that display this trait are seen as someone to look up to, or a role model. However individualism, as all things, comes with pros and cons. Trying to stand out too much can separate you from the group. This can drive competitiveness and competition. In my opinion, I think individualism is important, but often overly emphasized. While it is good to stand out, it is not the most important thing to be. It is more useful to be a team player, this benefits the group rather than oneself. I think more importance should be placed on helpfulness and flexibility, rather than individualism. Someone from outside of the US may view this trait as vain or boastful. Oftentimes in other countries there is more emphasis placed on conformity. They may also admire the bravery it takes in order to stand out and express yourself. I think this exercise has helped me to reflect on an important cultural ideal of the United States. It has made me think about how those outside of my country may view me as well.
