On our last day before returning to Taipei, we visited the vibrant city of Kaohsiung. It was fascinating to observe the contrasts between the capital city, Taipei, and this bustling coastal metropolis. While Taipei is known for its dense urban landscape and fast-paced energy, Kaohsiung exudes a more relaxed atmosphere, shaped by its connection to the ocean and the unique charm of its nearby island neighbor.
One of the most captivating features of Kaohsiung was its impressive infrastructure, seamlessly linking the city to the adjacent island. The innovative transportation systems stood out as a testament to the city’s integration of practicality and connectivity. For instance, we experienced the ferry boat service, which felt like a floating metro. This ferry isn’t just for pedestrians; it accommodates locals traveling with their motorcycles and even provides a quick, scenic way to commute. Additionally, there’s an underwater tunnel designed for cars, making the connection between the island and the mainland even more accessible.
As an island destination, the culinary offerings were distinct and exciting. We got to savor a variety of authentic Taiwanese dishes, especially seafood, which is understandably a staple in this coastal region. The local seafood dishes were fresh, flavorful, and offered an excellent way to experience the island’s culinary identity.
Another highlight of the visit was the iconic lighthouse, perched gracefully with an undeniable European architectural influence. Its design was both elegant and timeless, adding a touch of historical charm to the island. The lighthouse, surrounded by scenic ocean views, made for a perfect spot to pause and take in the serene beauty of the area.
