New Zealand – home of The Great Walks. It’s no mystery why Peter Jackson choose New Zealand to film the famous series The Lord of the Rings. It’s surreal with mountains on one side and beaches on the other. Volcanic structures everywhere, it can’t not impress you. So if you are into hiking (tramping here), you have so many choices. Personally, I recommend getting a 6-month or 12-month DOC(Department of Conservation) Hut pass, which always unlimited stays at their serviced huts, which are so impressive for someone who is used to camping and sleeping on the ground. There are a few famous ones that most people have to get in while visiting, including the Kepler Track, Milford Sound, and Roy’s Peak. Personally, the Greenstone and Caples Track was probably my favorite trek. Roy’s Peak is definitely the best day hike I’ve done though. If you’re staying in Dunedin, do the Pineapple Track and Signal Hill, two short day hikes (I did them both in one day). While the treks are nothing short of amazing, make sure you are well prepared, especially if you are not as experienced. It’s sadly not uncommon for deaths in these high adventure treks. Animals and poisonous plants luckily are the least of your worries. It’s the weather. We started the Kepler Track in these last two photos by the sunny beach in shorts and a tank top. By the time we reached the hut it was starting to rain. Overnight, feet of snow had reached our trek and the hazards of avalanches were more and more scary as we attempted to reach the summit. Luckily we made the choice to turn around and continue with our adventures elsewhere. Don’t worry you will be bombarded with plenty of DOC tips for hiking. Don’t let me discourage you, these treks are amazing and I would do them again in a heartbeat.
