Don’t be fooled. New Zealand is COLD. Especially for a Floridian, and ESPECIALLY in the South Island, in Dunedin. Way too close to the South Pole for my comfort zone. I thought it would be okay, three layers a day for half the time here, not bad. Just last week, it snowed on the Kepler Track, a few feet of snow. It’s almost the end of October. “Spring” was declared on September 1. It has snowed and hailed and all sorts of things since then.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s still worth the beauty you see here. Especially the Botanical Garden. Flowers in bloom of so many amazing colors. Birds chirp happily, even in the winter. Not like Rollins Spanish architecture, Uni at Dunedin is a different kind of beauty. Castle like at times. The cold doesn’t bother everyone. My flatmates from Massachusetts and Minnesota can comfortably walk around in shorts. I do so with goosebumps. If you are coming in the warm part of the year, you’ll have a lot more clothing diversity as my luggage was overweight with the sweaters and long pants I stuffed in my suitcase. You’ll also enjoy the snow and beautiful mountains covered in them. I was even likely enough to see some of the Winter Games! Unfortunately, the snowboarder from Colorado wiped out on the half pipe, probably breaking some ribs, leaving first and second to France. Oh well…maybe next time!
