Traveling to China comes with all sorts of intricacies when it comes to the topic of food. It all comes down to the type of eater you are. If you’re coming from a completely westernized way of life, where you have not developed a sense of adventure for food, well, China can come as a challenge for you. Whichever way you look at it, China holds a wide variety of great foods, each with its own twists and flares that make it unique and worth trying.
One of my favorite fast foods of China would have to be the classic Baozi. The small bread-like deliciousness which gets filled with many Chinese types of cooked meat. The best thing about these little joys to the tummy are there affordability. Every time is bike to class, I absolutely have to stop in from of the front gates of SHUFE to buy my 4-5 Baozis! They cost me 1.3 RMB each which equates to about .20 America cents. They leave you full like a full on meal, and they are super easy to transport!
While in Shanghai, my friend Mark was kind enough to take us to the many great places of Xintiandi. And though we had many exquisite meals, the truffle and egg Mac and Cheese was by far way too memorable for comparison. I can safely say that the Mac and Cheese I ate that nigh was the most expensive Mac and Chess I’ve ever consumed.
Another type of food I really enjoy is the good old HotPot style cuisine. That and Korean BBQ are two great food experiences that while you’re China you must enjoy. Although it can get really annoying having to sit for your meal to cook in front of you, the taste of the well prepared food would be worth the wait!
There are many more foods that you can expose yourself to while in China. Some good, some bad, others just quite interesting, and a few that become life long addictions. All you have to do is let it hit the right taste bud!
