Last weekend was absolutely amazing! It was my class excursion for Bernini and we went to Carrara. We were a small group, Professor Pestilli and his wife, Professor Butos and his wife (who often tagged along on our Bernini tours), and then the three people that comprised our class. It was less like a class trip and more like a family outing. I didn’t even take any notes! My notebook was just wasting space in my backpack. In Carrara we visited a sculpture studio and met the sculptor Diego who gave us a private lesson. Then we went inside the mountain to see the quarry which was the neatest thing I did during my stay in Italy. I took back four pieces of marble as a souvenir. We stayed at a cute little bed and breakfast of this Japanese woman. I actually got to eat scrambled eggs and her homemade buns were heaven (I managed to smuggle one back to Rome and it still tasted delicious two days later)!
Our next stop was Orvieto where we saw the Duomo, a church on the water, two underground caves, and plenty of sculptures. Breathtaking sites and not once did I get the feeling that “this is gonna be on the test.” It was really just a way to unwind and take a break for once. Professor Pestilli treated us to dinner every night and I was not disappointed, steak, steamed prawns, black truffle pasta, and boar. So good.
We got back to Rome early in the afternoon on Sunday and it suddenly hit me that I only had two weeks left in Rome. And now that it’s the middle of the first week of my last two I realized that I only have about a week left! Do you know how much I still have to do!? Shopping, eating, looking at stuff! And not just that, but exams! My first exam is this Friday! Where did the semester go and why am I not studying right now!? It’s crazy to think that my three months are almost up and then I’m back home. But I’m ready. Rome is a beautiful city and while I hate to leave it I’m ready to see my family for the first time in months.
