Germany is waking up this morning to an EU where its second largest economy has just voted to leave the Union. For Germany this is particularly significant since issues of immigration and acceptance of refugees have probably tipped the balance in the election. Germany has been the voice in Europe pleading that others take in people fleeing to the continent in the last 18 months in particular.
Will more countries make the choice to leave the EU? How many would have to leave before it become untenable to keep the union together? Can Ireland stay in the EU when it is now so on the fringe? The Germans are major contributors to the EU — a job that becomes even more difficult without the contributions from GB. But for historic reasons alone Germany couldn’t take the “nationalist” path and leave the EU — right?
The weeks and months to come will tell an interesting further story.
