Living in Madrid and working during the week was a great experience. I felt as though I actually was there live, instead of just going on vacation. I believe this to be the best way to fully experience the culture of a city, and feel a part of it. With that being said, I loved having the opportunity to travel on the weekend and made a few trips that I will never forget. The food and views of San Sebastián, the architecture and history of Toledo, the wine and the vibrant culture of Porto, and the wonderful people of Candelario, are all things I will remember for a very long time, in addition to my experience at IFEMA.
My favorite place in Madrid was El Parque de Retiro, I have a hard time being in the rush of the city 100% of the time and this beautiful park was the perfect escape for me. The labyrinth of paths that lead to different monuments and fountains under the shade of tall trees were a perfect way to escape for a day. The best monument of all is dedicated to Alfonso XII and overlooks the rectangular lake in the center of the park. Here you can take out row boats to get a better view of the marble statue surrounded by towering roman columns. Truly a sight to behold.
