This past weekend I went on an ISA trip to Capri, Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius. I had been waiting for this trip for as long as I can remember! We left early on Friday morning and made it to Mt. Vesuvius. The climb to the top was surprisingly difficult. My calves were on fire by the end but the view at the top was stunning. We then made our way back to Sorrento which was a small town that looked as if they had plucked it out of a fairytale. We had a fantastic dinner of none other than pasta (it never gets old) and the next day we made our way to Capri.
Capri was unreal. I couldn’t believe I was actually there! About 20 of us rented a boat and made our way around the island. I seriously contemplated dropping out and living in a boat on this island. What mesmerised me the most was the color of the water. Not just from the outside but if you opened your eyes underwater you could see everything it was so clear- but also it was the most beautiful shade of blue. It’s indescribable. We also took the tram to the top of the hills and saw Capri from above. It was unreal- one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
The next day we went to Pompeii. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain but walking down the streets of Pompeii I couldn’t believe how much of the city had been preserved. A cool fact I learned was that the eruption of the volcano was the force of 50,000 atomic bombs! At one point the sky cleared up enough to see Mt. Vesuvius behind the city of Pompeii and the magnitude of what I was looking at really hit me. The trip ended with something I wanted to see the most- the statue of the lovers that died. I’d read about it and seen it movies but I never thought I’d get to see it in real life. I am so grateful for the experiences I’ve had so far studying abroad and this weekend is climbing to the top of my list!
