This past week has been filled with both new and old friends!
Friday night I went out with my exchange friends to Mr. Wong’s for a little “girls night out” dinner. Now, Mr. Wong’s is pretty famous in the Hong Kong exchange student community. Particularly, it is known for having tables spilling out the doors full of students and serving cheap, bottomless food (and beer). After waiting for a while, we followed suit and made our own table from the stacks of tables and chairs lining the side of the restaurant. Mr. Wong himself came to our table, bringing out dish after dish, cracking jokes the whole night.
The next day, a new friend of mine from mainland China invited me to go to Victoria’s Peak with him to see the cityscape at night. We took the trolley up the mountain and went down a street that he said was a secret only the locals knew about. After walking down this path surrounded by trees, we reached a clearing and had the entire cityscape right before our eyes. It was amazing. I never knew that I could find such beauty from a city filled with skyscrapers and concrete.
Sunday morning, I was thrilled to be meeting up with a familiar face from Rollins. Marissa, a faculty member in the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement where I had worked last year, was in Hong Kong for the weekend! I met her and her travel buddies at Tim Ho Wan, a Michelin-starred dim sum restaurant. It was so nice to hear from her and about all of the people back at Rollins that I miss so dearly. When I left, she gave me a card from those back home and it was just what I needed.
While I am making new relationships and having new adventures here in Hong Kong, it is always nice to have a little piece of home.
