Aside from my usual order of the BBQ pork and rice at the school canteen, I have tried to explore the wide variety of food available in Hong Kong. My first “foodie” adventure started when two of my mainland China friends invited me and two of my exchange friends to a hotpot restaurant. Now I had never experienced hotpot before and I quickly realized just how unprepared I really was for this moment. I should have fasted for at least the entire day because holy moly was there a lot of food! As a hotpot virgin, I was so thankful to have people with me who knew the language and could handle the ordering. After loading our plates with all different types of vegetables, dumplings, noodles, and other things, they brought out our meat and two different types of broth for us to use to cook our food. It was so much fun poking my chopsticks into the pot, grabbing out different things to try, and laughing with some good friends. We had been there for a little over an hour when we realized they were trying to kick us out! Apparently since hotpot is buffet style, they put a time limit on your stay. We quickly finished up and hit the ice cream bar on the way out… You can never turn down some free soft serve đ
Foodie adventure #2: My group of exchange friends and I have started a new tradition called “Fat Fridays” where every Friday a new member of the group chooses a restaurant for us to try. My name was drawn as the selector of our very first Fat Friday. In honor of National Margarita Day, I decided that we were going to get tacos! I found this tiny little Mexican restaurant in the middle of nowhere called Taco Chaca. They did not disappoint. The burritos were delicious and the company was even better. After our meal, we stopped at a rooftop bar near the harbor to grab a drink and enjoy the view.
For my final delicious detour, my friends and I went on a hunt for the best egg waffle in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is notorious for their egg waffles, which are similar to normal waffles except for their egg-like shape. A student that was here last semester suggested we try the restaurant Eat With Me, which pairs their waffles with ice cream. Yum! After devouring my egg waffle dessert and my S’mores hot chocolate, I felt like I had to be rolled out of the door.
The things we do for food, am I right?
