The past three weeks have been very interesting while in Madrid. Although I am ready to get back home to the states I am very glad I chose to embark on this study abroad trip. The many cultural experiences have really shown me the vast differences in culture and daily routines compared to the United States. In the second part of this program the most enriching experience was definitely the group trip to Candelario which I would have most likely not visited on my own. The history in the small city of 900 people was very deep and was evident after a tour of the city from the historian who lives there. The constant battle for influence through religion in Spain was present in this little city just as it is in many others where the little things that people did showed their beliefs. During the tour, Alberto told us how that eating pork was showing they were Christians and were apart of the majority when Christianity was the dominant religion of the region. Additionally, we saw a very nice abandoned town that has been upkept for tourists which I thought was neat. The trip to Candelario was much better than I initially expected and I am very glad I was able to experience the culture of a very small Spanish city that I would normally not get to see in Madrid.
