I arrived in DC Wednesday, August 23, at 6 p.m. I made best friends with my Lyft driver, Daniel, got his number, and talked with him about his newly proposed-to fiancee. We’re probably going to see the US’s largest drum circle Sunday evening, but before that, I have to make time for my roommate. His name is Ismael. He goes to Austin College in Texas, and his American University concentration is Global Economics while at American University. Every Washington Semester Program (WSP) student has an academic concentration for which they take a seminar course, write a research paper, and complete an internship. My concentration is Journalism and New Media. Yesterday, Thursday, August 24, I met my professors, Iris Krasnow and Gilbert Klein. Prof. Klein graduated from Rollins College, where he wrote for the school newspaper (also Florida’s longest continuously published college newspaper) the Sandspur. He knew all the words to our alma mater and sang it to make sure we knew. Lauren Timmerman, a junior at Rollins College, is also on the WSP with a Journalism and New Media concentration. Prof. Krasnow has been a journalist for 40 years, and she is excited to show us DC and send us into the field of what she calls “The Golden Age of Journalism.” For our first class assignment, all Journalism and New Media students have to attend dinner together. We plan to go out tonight, Friday, August 25. I have met many wonderful for spending less than three days in DC, and I am sure I will meet many more. That’s all for now though. Until my next post, I am
Sincerely yours,
