March 31,
Last week I took a trip to Highgate Cemetery in North London. Highgate Cemetery is home to many prominent figures including Karl Marx. The cemetery is located besides a beautiful park and the grounds itself were stunning. It also housed some friendly cats, one of which was happily intent to follow us around for our time in the cemetery. Marx’s grave was massive topped with a sculpture of Marx’s head, and more importantly his iconic beard. The grave was covered with flowers that people had left, most noticeably was a group of flowers labeled to be from the Labor Party in Turkey. The irony of Highgate cemetery was that there was a fee. The grave Karl Marx, the famous author of works like the “Communist Manifesto” and “Das Kapital”, feared enemy of capitalism, costed four pounds to see. I imagine that Marx was literally turning over in his grave. Either way Highgate Cemetery was well worth the trip and money for the friendly cats, beautiful scenery, and the historic resting place of one of the worlds most prominent and radical thinkers. On a side note, we decided to name the cat that befriended us either Sophie, or Kitty. She had a pink collar so we assumed it was a she.
