Ladies and gents it has been a TIME AND A HALF since we have last hung out! How is everyone? (Hi Nat, Luke and Jack!) I have been dancing through life these past couple weeks in Greece doing super Greek things- so much so that when I look in the mirror I start to see an Athenian rather than a Floridian? Maybe that is just wishful thinking but I digress… let us discuss Greek women. In short they are AMAZING. I went to the house of a friend who is staying with a host family and we hung with her mom and her mom’s friends and talked for hours. No subject was off limits and she made the most phenomenal dessert (I got the recipe and promise to make it for you). She lived in an actual treehouse situated in a neighborhood with primarily military families. This was a different feel from bustling Athens, much more relaxed, and it was certainly a welcomed change. As I think I have said before, being abroad gives you a lot of time to think and grow as a human therefore I MUST share some insight into this crazy thing called life.
- Skorts (skirts with shorts attached) are the most amazing piece of clothing ever invented. They are comfortable, sweat proof, cute, and can be worn as casual, sporty, or nicer depending on what you decide to put on your top half. Everyone run to a Columbia outlet right now and pick up a skort. I am at the peak of Athenian fashion.
- Another fashion tip, dress to blend in but do not forget your own style! Greeks LOVE their denim and looking *nicer at all times which was difficult to adjust to when you are used to wearing sick graphic tees every day. I left many of these amazing graphic tees at home because I wanted to blend in but as I am becoming more comfortable here, so is my fashion sense so YES I am having my family bring my Kevin Bacon tee when they come to visit π (god bless Kevin Bacon)
- Karaoke is an amazing way to make friends and is quite popular in Athens. There is nothing like singing Piano Man and Crocodile Rock in a small space with a bunch of strangers. You will never forget it.
- Go to the Temple of Zeus every. Single. Day. There are no words to describe it.
You might be reading this and thinking, “Erin, skorts are great but tell me about GREECE!” Alright alright I will! People in Greece LOVE Van Morrison and Bon Jovi… shocking I know. The museums here are out of this world. This past weekend I spent over three hours in the war museum looking at beautiful paintings, actual captured Nazi flags (yes Greece was involved in WWII), and retired fighter planes/tanks. Thinking of the experience now made my eyes wet with joy.Β It is getting colder and I am incredibly ill prepared. This honey MUST go shopping and quick otherwise she may freeze. I go to the Peloponnese in a few weeks which should fulfill more dreams of mine. Not only will I be running at Olympia but these feet of mine will set foot on Spartan soil… I can’t wait to do a little jig and practice my fighting skills (hilarious because as a woman in Sparta I would only be allowed/required to have Spartan soldiers but a girl can dream!)
Sorry this post was a little longer and scattered and didn’t make much sense… I miss you Rollins Tars! I can’t wait to fill you in again soon.
Kalimara,
Erin
I smiled the whole time I read this. I’m glad you’re having fun π
Thank you so much Michael! I also love your posts… you are THRIVING in our nation’s capital!
All the hearts, Erin McFee <3
Ahh that sound amazing. If you ever have time to write a little on the philosophy scene of Athens, being the philosophy major I am, I would be very very happy! π
Have the best time
