After departing Corfu we took a bus (driven by an eccentric old man named Socrates) to Athens. The city itself wasn’t entirely impressive in my opinion. It lacked the elegance of older European buildings (the city was rebuilt in the 1950s by the Germans) and every corner seemed to be an overpriced tourist shop. Regardless, I still had an amazing time exploring the city. I ate the most amazing falafel from a little food truck and tried a delicious tea made from Orchid roots. One of our shopping highlights was getting custom made sandals from a famous “Poet sandal maker” who has made sandals for anyone from Jackie O to John Lennon. After our shopping spree a group of hiked up the acropolis to visit the majestic Parthenon. Although highly under construction, it was surreal to think that I was walking where ancient Greeks had once also walked to visit this beautiful temple.
After Athens we took yet another ferry to my absolute favorite island (and one of the most famous) Santorini! The beautiful white and blue buildings were everything I thought they would be and more. We took two days to explore this town, although I only wish I could’ve spent a week here! One of my favorite memories will always buying an unnecessary amount of baklava with my two roommates and bringing it one of the highest points of the island. While devouring this famous Greek dessert we watched the beautiful sunset and observed as construction worker led donkeys up and down the mountain. It was a Greek moment I will never ever forget.
