I promised myself I would do more to be engaged with the community this semester. I spent all summer with friends who did service, whether organizing SPARC Day or volunteering at the Conductive Education Center of Orlando, and they reminded me how little I had given of myself while at Rollins. I worried I wouldn’t have time to anything because of my internship and courses, but fortunately, American University has DC Reads, a literacy program for college students to tutor children from kindergarten through middle school in the DC area. It’ll be only two hours a week, but two hours over eight can make the difference of a whole grade level in reading comprehension. As for my being more involved, it may not be giving a lot of myself, but it’s a start.
