I’m simply finding it amazing how Hitler could have taken all this power to himself as a dictator without anyone freaking out over it. My best guess is that anyone who realised what was going on and was vocal about it would have been swiftly killed. Otherwise, the show and the spectacle which hid the truth about the government just freaks me out. Imagine going to Disney World on opening day, to see all of the company’s finest new projects on display, only to find out that Disney was to start a war with someone.
I have a feeling my character would have been told about the hardships of WWI as a child, only narrowly having escaped growing up during it. She would have seen Hitler’s government as a saving grace for Germany, bringing it up from poverty and destruction to happiness and mightiness and glory. But I think that the declaration of war against Poland and the resulting air raid sirens would have terrified her. To be around my age, living alone in the capital and having to go to work every day under the threat of bombings and destruction, is insane. That being said, plenty of office workers here experienced that in 2001 and millions of people in war-torn nations had and have been under this threat.

All over the Western World, the generation that came of age in World War I and then lived through the Depression and World War II were deeply scarred. It was a hard life.
