I searched and searched for the the cheapest possible tickets in order to ball as much as I could on a budget, ending up with a ticket that was as economic as it was inconveniently timed.

The next Saturday morning, I rise at 4:00am. Through my window, with enough effort, one could probably find traces of partygoers making it home from a night out. My backpack and I arrive promptly at Line 13 in order to make sure my early wake was not in vain. I’m off towards Hamburg.

I was aware that the weekend would be colder than usual (not only because of of my route northward, but also due to an unexpected and late winter cold front). The train’s doors opened at a stop in Göttingen. The wind, the powdery snow, the cold air all penetrated my layers of clothing during that brief moment and at that point, I was 90% sure I would die the moment I stepped outside.

But by some strange blessing, however, Hamburg welcomed me with a bright and sunny day. I had a great time with my friends, took some pictures, ate Franzbrötchen and Schmalzgebäck, had my beanie blown away by the wind, befriended a weird 10 year old kid who liked posting videos about Germany’s trains, everything one could want from a weekend vacation. Night fell and the bright and sunny turned to weird and hedonistic. I went to google to help me describe my visit to Reeperbahn, and all the reviews were either 1-star worst thing ever or 5-stars would highly recommend. My opinion does not fall strongly on either side; all I have to say is that one will probably have a good mind if one does not have a closed mindset. You should probably see (or google it for yourself) to get an opinion of it.

My trip concluded with a Sunday trip to the museum for culture, a Sunday trip to the cafe to hide from the cold, and a painful opening of my wallet to pay for my missed train ride back home.

Considering whether or not to spend some money on myself this weekend, I heard the wise words of Tom Haverford ring softly inside my head: “…treat yo’ self!” It was decided– I would visit my friends in Hamburg for the weekend.
