{"id":4923,"date":"2016-06-15T10:35:39","date_gmt":"2016-06-15T14:35:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/social.rollins.edu\/wpsites\/letters\/?p=4923"},"modified":"2019-07-29T21:19:44","modified_gmt":"2019-07-29T21:19:44","slug":"wichtige-worter-or-things-for-us-amerikaner-to-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.rollins.edu\/letters\/2016\/06\/15\/wichtige-worter-or-things-for-us-amerikaner-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"Wichtige W\u00f6rter, or things for us &#8220;Amerikaner&#8221; to know&#8230;.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although most of us identify ourselves as poor Americans the moment try to say something, there are some words that\u00a0are\u00a0helpful to know.<\/p>\n<p>Even us Amerikaner should learn that to ask for &#8220;eine <strong>Eiskugel<\/strong>, bitte,&#8221; for instance (yes, <strong>Kugel<\/strong>, pl. <strong>Kugeln<\/strong>, is a feminine word). There are so many wonderful looking icecream shops around M\u00fcnster, and it is self-satisfying to be able to do more than point significantly.<br \/>\nAnother thing: I never noticed how often we need to qualify statements when we speak. &#8220;<strong>Manchmal<\/strong>,&#8221; or sometimes, becomes another important word to use when talking in class or answering or questions from the G\u00e4stefamilie.<br \/>\nI must confess, that I never had a dog (very sad, I know) since my mother didn&#8217;t want to deal with it, and my G\u00e4stemutter is allergic to them, so instead her familie has snails!\u00a0two enormous snails, around five or six inches long. And the word for snails is &#8220;<strong>die Schneke<\/strong>&#8221; (for the two of them, <strong>Schneken<\/strong>). Their names are Flitzy and Spiderman.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.rollins.edu\/letters\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160614_185159-300x180.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16460 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.rollins.edu\/letters\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/IMG_20160614_185159-300x180-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI babysat the snails yesterday while the\u00a0girls\u00a0cleaned out <strong>das\u00a0Terrarium<\/strong>. Snails\u00a0are actually quite interesting little critters. My G\u00e4stemutter thought, though, that I should refer to this activity as &#8220;<strong>beobachten<\/strong>,&#8221; which means to observe (in a scientific sort of way).<br \/>\n<strong>Pr\u00e4sens<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<del><\/del><em>Ich beobachte<br \/>\nDu beobachtest<\/em><br \/>\n<em>er\/sie\/es beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wir beobachten<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ihr beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sie\/Sie beobachten.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Perfekt<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Ich habe beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>du hast beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>er\/sie\/es hat beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wir haben\u00a0beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ihr habt\u00a0beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sie\/Sie haben\u00a0beobachtet<\/em><br \/>\nThere is the word <strong>gucken<\/strong>. The professors, host family&#8211;everyone uses this word, and for the longest while I had no idea what it meant; I couldn&#8217;t look it up in the dictionary because I thought it began with a &#8220;k.&#8221;\u00a0It is a synonym of &#8220;shauen,&#8221; and LEO kindly says that it is &#8220;ugs.,&#8221; or a colloquial, slang word.<br \/>\n<strong>Pr\u00e4sens<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<em>Ich gucke<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Du guckst<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Er\/sie.es\u00a0\u00a0guckt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wir gucken<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ihr guckt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sie\/Sie gucken<\/em>.<br \/>\n<strong>Perfekt<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Ich habe geguckt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Du hast\u00a0geguckt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Er\/sie\/es hat\u00a0geguckt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wir haben\u00a0geguckt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ihr habt\u00a0geguckt<\/em><br \/>\n<em>sie\/Sie haben\u00a0geguckt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other words whose helpful nature is self-evident:<br \/>\n<strong>wahrscheinlich<\/strong>: probably<br \/>\n<strong>obwohl<\/strong>: although<br \/>\n<strong>der Quatsch<\/strong> (kein pl): \u00a0nonsense (or blatherskites).<br \/>\n<strong>aus Spa\u00df<\/strong>: for fun<br \/>\n<strong>schrullig<\/strong>: cranky or eccentric.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although most of us identify ourselves as poor Americans the moment try to say something, there are some words that\u00a0are\u00a0helpful to know.
