Due to the cultures being similar in music and language I have not experienced extreme culture shock. Also, American politics is often a topic of discussion. The accent is different than America but overall I have not felt like I am on the other side of the globe. They have different slang words, and the overall pricing of items is high, but the conversion rate makes it look lower. One thing I have definitely learned is how to not take life so seriously.
Many Aussies start their day either on a run or going surfing before work then they go and spend time with friends. Exercise and healthy living are essential parts of the culture here. For instance, the day before City to Surf occurred which is an 18 km run from Sydney city to Bondi Beach my friend and I decided to join. It was an amazing experience that allowed exploration of new areas and I met amazing people along the route.
One aspect I did not expect was the lack of Australian-born friends I would have. For instance, I have 5 Australian friends, but I have more German, Netherlands, and American friends here. I did not expect to be learning german on my phone with Duolingo while I was in Australia. However, I have made more international friends here that I hope to visit one day therefore, I am grateful. I love all the people I have met here and have not had bad interactions unless the uber driver is mad at his GPS and takes it out on you lol.
One noticeable feature is they drive on the opposite side of the road. This took a little while to adjust to; I found myself looking in both directions multiple times before crossing the street. Also, a good amount of people drive here, but public transportation and walking around is easy.
The birds may look pretty but they will swoop. One seagull took my friend’s sandwich and one magpie hit me on the head. Therefore, be aware.
In conclusion, I am so glad I chose to come to Australia. The people, culture, and scenery are everything I could have hoped for. I truly am grateful for this experience. I suggest to everyone who comes abroad to find a spot nearby where you can go when you are stressed. On my google maps, I have a collection of places under the title, “places to think.” This includes the Sydney Opera House, Shelly beach, a park next to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and many other spots. When you are abroad you are going to want to do so much during these few months and these places allow you to reflect.
