During my time abroad in Newcastle, Australia, one observation that has captivated my curiosity is the unique relationship Australians have with the environment, particularly their admiration for nature and their efforts towards sustainability. So, being intrigued by this aspect of Australian culture, I decided to dive deeper into understanding the underlying beliefs and values driving this connection.
In conversation with my Aboriginal Communities Professor, I learned that Australia’s deep-rooted respect for the environment stems from its indigenous heritage, where the land is viewed as a sacred entity to be cherished and preserved for future generations. This cultural belief is reflected in various aspects of Australian society, from government policies prioritizing conservation efforts to grassroots movements advocating for sustainable living practices.
Moreover, the dedication that Australians have to environmental sustainability goes beyond their words; and it is instead ingrained in their daily decisions and actions. For example, from widespread recycling initiatives to the widespread utilization of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, Australians actively strive to minimize their ecological footprint.
This culture emphasizes on environmental care, which has profoundly influenced my engagement with both Australia and its culture. Therefore, as a student from the U.S., I’ve been inspired to adopt more sustainable habits in my daily life, such as reducing single-use plastic consumption and embracing alternative transportation methods like walking or public transit. Additionally, I’ve gained an appreciation for the mutual and interactive relationship that there is between humanity and the environment, but also being able to recognize the importance in addressing global environmental challenges.
That being said, I am committed to incorporating these lessons into my personal and professional life, advocating for environmental conservation and sustainability both at home and abroad. So by embracing the values and beliefs of Australia, I hope to contribute positively to the global movement towards a more environmentally conscious future.
