A few months ago, I read this comment from a visitor who experienced our Spanish language program Arte y Café Con la Curadora (Art and Coffee with the Curator):
“Thank you for offering this in Spanish. Today I was able to invite and bring 4 friends who are all women, and refugees who just arrived in the U.S. from Central America. To be able to offer a free event in their language is so precious of a gift. Thank you.”
The comment instantly took me back to 1988, when I myself had just arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Eastern Europe. Although I did speak English, it wasn’t my language yet, and to be welcomed to a museum in Romanian would have provided some much-needed familiarity to my younger self trying to find my place in this new country, hoping that sooner or later I may feel that I belong.
Hace unos meses, leí este comentario de un visitante que asistió a nuestra charla en español Arte y Café Con la Curadora:
“Gracias por ofrecer esto en español. Hoy pude invitar y traer a 4 amigas que son todas mujeres y refugiadas que acaban de llegar a los EE. UU. desde América Central. Poder ofrecer un evento gratuito en su idioma es un regalo muy valioso. Gracias”.
El comentario me hizo retroceder instantáneamente a 1988, cuando yo misma acababa de llegar a Estados Unidos como refugiada procedente de Europa del Este. Aunque hablaba inglés, todavía no era mi idioma, y que me dieran la bienvenida a un museo en rumano le habría proporcionado cierta familiaridad muy necesaria a mi yo más joven, que intentaba encontrar su lugar en este nuevo país, con la esperanza de que tarde o temprano pudiera sentir que pertenecía allí.
The Context: Feeling Welcome/ El contexto: sentirse bienvenido
How can museums help visitors feel welcome, feel that they belong? First, by ensuring that they all recognize themselves and their experience in the galleries. Here at Rollins Museum of Art, we started that process back in 2014 when we prioritized acquiring and exhibiting works by artists of color and all those who have been historically marginalized. People need to see themselves on the walls of the museum, but also to be represented in their own voice. That means authenticity – an essential element of which is the original language.
¿Cómo pueden los museos ayudar a los visitantes a sentirse bienvenidos, a sentirse parte de la comunidad? En primer lugar, asegurándose de que todos se reconozcan a sí mismos y a su experiencia en las galerías. Aquí en el Museo de Arte Rollins, comenzamos ese proceso en 2014, cuando priorizamos la adquisición y exhibición de obras de artistas de color y de todos aquellos que han sido históricamente marginados. Las personas necesitan verse a sí mismas en las paredes del museo, pero también estar representadas con su propia voz. Eso significa autenticidad, un elemento esencial de la cual es el lenguaje original.
The Need/ La necesidad
Central Florida is home to a fast-growing Spanish-speaking population, originating from Central and South America, the Dominican Republic, Cuba. Since 2017 we also have the largest Puerto Rican population on the mainland. In 2022, Osceola County was more than half Hispanic. And yet today, in 2024, there is no art museum in our community that is fully bilingual English – Spanish.
La Florida Central alberga una población hispanohablante en rápido crecimiento, originaria de América Central y del Sur, la República Dominicana y Cuba. Desde 2017 también tenemos la mayor población puertorriqueña del continente. En 2022, el condado de Osceola era más de la mitad hispano. Y, sin embargo, hoy, en 2024, no hay ningún museo de arte en nuestra comunidad que sea completamente bilingüe inglés-español.
The Rollins Museum of Art Response/ La respuesta de Rollins Museum of Art
As a teaching museum that centers accessibility and learning, we needed to do something about it. Our curator since 2018, Dr. Gisela Carbonell, who is from Puerto Rico and fully bilingual, made it her project. The above-mentioned Arte y Café program started in 2019 and has grown ever since, bringing an entirely new demographic to the museum.
Como museo educativo que se centra en la accesibilidad y el aprendizaje, necesitábamos hacer algo al respecto. Nuestra curadora desde 2018, la Dra. Gisela Carbonell, que es de Puerto Rico y completamente bilingüe, lo convirtió en su proyecto. El programa Arte y Café mencionado anteriormente comenzó en 2019 y ha crecido desde entonces, trayendo un grupo demográfico completamente nuevo al museo.
“As a native Spanish speaker and as a member of the team at the Rollins Museum of Art, I am excited to embark on this significant and transformative project to make our exhibition texts available in Spanish on the museum walls. Not only is our mission to make art accessible to everyone reflected in our free admission, in quality events always open to the public, and in our diverse collection, but now also, providing a more welcoming experience for our growing Spanish speaking community in Central Florida,” noted Dr. Carbonell.
This fall we go to the second phase of the project: providing wall texts and labels in both languages.
“Como hablante nativa de español y como miembro del equipo del Museo de Arte Rollins, estoy emocionada de embarcarme en este proyecto significativo y transformador para hacer que los textos de nuestras exhibiciones estén disponibles en español en las paredes del museo. Nuestra misión de hacer que el arte sea accesible para todos no solo se refleja en nuestra entrada gratuita, en eventos de calidad siempre abiertos al público y en nuestra diversa colección, sino también ahora en brindar una experiencia más acogedora para nuestra creciente comunidad de habla hispana en Florida Central”, señaló la Dra. Carbonell.
Este otoño pasamos a la segunda fase del proyecto: proporcionar textos y etiquetas en las paredes en ambos idiomas.
What’s Next/ ¿Qué sigue?
Making the museum fully bilingual takes time and resources. This is a multi-phase project whose future steps will include the website and marketing materials, especially the season brochures.
Lograr que el museo sea completamente bilingüe requiere tiempo y recursos. Se trata de un proyecto de varias fases cuyos pasos futuros incluirán el sitio web y los materiales de marketing, especialmente los folletos de temporada.
The goal is to signal to our community that the Rollins Museum of Art is a welcoming and inclusive platform for the experience of art, intentionally catering to our diverse, multi-national community.
El objetivo es mostrarle a nuestra comunidad que el Museo de Arte Rollins es una plataforma acogedora e inclusiva para la experiencia del arte, que atiende intencionalmente a nuestra comunidad diversa y multinacional.
