Pieces of red moss. From Yosemite National Park. The moss is actually red, brown, and yellow. It is currently unknown what exact type of moss it is.
Reeve traveled to Yosemite a decade before it became a national park.2 At the time John Muir, the father of modern environmental science, was become a fixture there.1 This was part of the 1870 Yale Geological Expedition. At the time the regions they visited were still wild and dangerous.3 Trips like this were fairly common from universities.
